Interview with Crimson Rain
Pras Kumar and Avi Pranish formed the New Zealand band in 2010 with the aim to write hard rocking songs with groove and soul. To signify the genre diversity and influences the band has, the name Crimson Rain was chosen.
Crimson signifies the colour of blood to represent the strong emotional connection they have for their music. They have ranges from soft flamenco to hard head banging riffs, just like the various forms of rain.
Since starting out, the band has recorded an EP titled One by One produced by Ben Ruegg. Three singles Why, The Mask Within and Are You Happy out now all produced by Zorran Mendonsa.
‘Why’ made its way into the Hitz FM ‘Malaysian English Top 10 charts’. The band also had the distinction of being nominated in the Best Rock act category at the Bite My Music Global Awards, which is the global Indie music platform.
On May 31, CR’s latest single ‘Catastrophe’ was released to the world which was produced by Zorran Mendosa (nephew of Loy from Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy).
Rumour has it the song was named after a cat jumped into a trophy filled with ‘beverage’. While trying to get of the trophy, both cat and the trophy fell onto the floor, spilling all the ‘beverage’ in the process.
The band members were witness to this event as innocent bystanders. At the sight of the spilt ‘beverage’, cat and trophy – the song was inspired and written accordingly as a catastrophe.
The cat escaped without any injury or loss of any of its nine lives!
Crimson Rain is heading to Malaysia on July 15 for a few gigs with prominent local acts.
How would you best describe your music?
Passionate, soulful and not restricted by genre. The arrangement ranges from soft melodic passages to killer head banging sections.Fused with heart and soul and large chunks of groove!
Tell us a dirty secret about yourself (or the band)
We write songs after a large dosage of Teh Tarik and Nasi Goreng..the magic formula..shhh
If you had a chance to collaborate with any musician on the planet, who would it be and why?
Karl Cromok – Another You is one of the most heartfelt pieces ever written in our opinion.
Would love to collaborate on a similar instrumental piece. Foo Fighters, Seether, Breaking Benjamin – they write songs with attitude, honesty and soul.
What would you like to be remembered for?
Beautiful music, Epic live shows, relentless attitudes and a Teh Tarik obsession.
You win a chance to open for your favourite act – what song would you perform and what would you do on stage?
Without a doubt, we would perform Catastrophe. The stage will have a large trophy as the backdrop, start of with fireworks from the trophy. Half way through, we ll let our friend interrupt the show with a ‘performance’.. this person shall remain anonymous at present.
Share with us two of your favourite quotes
‘Its not the mileage you have done, it’s the mileage you have left in you..’
‘Sticks and stones may my break my bones..but this music shapes my soul..’
What is your all time favourite song and movie? Why?
Seether – Fine Again, that’s what started it all, honest lyrics and epic instrumentation
Batman Begins trilogy – no need to explain, it is the Dark Knight…
What are your songs about?
The songs are about the journey of life, there is joy and sorrow along the way. This transient nature of our existence is reflected by the variant style of our music. There is a strong theme in the songs in that no one is alone in this journey.
Once upon a time, a fan told us that one of our songs helped them get through a very difficult period in their life. That is the greatest compliment anyone can ever give you as a musician and a very fulfilling one as well.
What is your advice to up and coming musicians ?
Music is one of the toughest industry to be in, believe in what you do, otherwise don’t do it.
Good things take time, stay strong!! Teh Tarik and Nasi Goreng are our winning formula, find yours.
