As it continued, the NBA waved farewell to Yao Ming, Gary Locke took a plane to Beijing — and Asians in the library made their cell phones ring. As 2012 begins, here are Tao Jones’s picks for the best, the worst and the most memorable events, individuals and phenomena of the year that was.
Asians in the Library
In March, Alexandra Wallace — an undergraduate at UCLA, whose student body is 45 percent Asian — released a bizarre three-minute rant on YouTube attacking the school’s “hordes of Asians,” mocking their use of cell phones in the school libraries with a string of nonsense syllables (“Ching Chong Ling Long Ting Tong”). Their first nationwide tour of Japan, “VAMPS LIVE 2008″, kicked off at Zepp Tokyo. Between August 1, 2008 and October 28, 2008, VAMPS played 46 shows at the prestigious Zepp live houses throughout Japan. 46 shows in just 3 months is a rough schedule indeed! The tour was totally organized by VAMPS and the venues were custom decorated by spray paint such as the now-famous VAMPS castle.
